Miaka and Yui are happy. Miaka takes her high school entrance exams, and passes--even receiving a higher score than Yui. The two attend the same school. One day, Miaka's brother introduces her to a guy that recently transferred into his school, named Taka. He tells her that Taka had said he remembered protecting a girl he loved in the past. When Miaka looks at him, she notices he is wearing the ring that she had given Tamahome during their informal wedding ceremony. Miaka is happy and runs to him. In the book, Tamahome had given up his memories, to be sealed in seven jewels of memory, so that he could be reborn in Miaka's world to be with her. As Taka, he had finally reunited with his love. The two are dating and happy. One day, they notice a new boy who has transferred to Miaka's class. He is a little suspicious, but is really popular with the girls, and says he's running for class president. Miaka starts to have dreams that Suzaku is calling for her help. Miaka and Taka are attacked by some students under the control of the new student and Miaka is thrown off the roof. Taka jumps off after her and holds her in his arms as they fall. As they are about to hit the ground, the light of suzaku appears and transports them into the universe of the four gods. Tasuki is there to greet them, but Taka doesn't recognize him because he still doesn't have his memories. Chichiri shows up and gets Tasuki to give Taka one of the jewels of memory that was taken from him. He remembers some of the past. They then travel to Mt. Tykioku where Chichiri's jewel of memory is returned to Taka. Taiiskun and the spirits of the deceased seishi gather there. Taiiscun tells them of a battle to come. They must find all of Tamahome's jewels of memory and return them to him before the enemy gets them. There is an explosion, as the new student gives a speech in the real world, that incites negative emotions from the students. It blasts the mountain, sending each of the seishi far away. Tasuki, dives over to save Miaka and ends up saving her from drowning in a lake. Chichiri and Taka show up and they travel to the Konan palace in order to retrieve Hotohori's jewel of memory. When they arrive, they find that the empress hasn't spoken in a year and a half because she is so depressed over Hotohori's death. Hotohori's baby son, Boshim hasn't spoken either. Hotohori tries to contact his wife, but being a spirit, she can't see him. Taka lets Hotohori use his body in order to hold his son and comfort his wife. They find the jewel of memory in Boshim, and Taka regains more of his memories. Miaka and Taka are pulled back into the real world. Miaka is again attacked on the school roof top by a gang of students being controlled by the suspicious boy. On his way to reach her, Taka is bitten on the ear by a woman pretending to be hurt. This weakens Taka, but he still manages to show up on the roof and fights to save Miaka. They use the scroll of Suzaku to trap him and he disappears. They go back into the book and appear outside Nuriko's house to see the others trying to sneak in to Nuriko's house to attain the fourth jewel of memory, which his brother has. Taka is attacked on the inside from a monster that was placed there when he was bitten on the ear. They manage to save him by drawing out the creature and killing it. Taka gets the memories from the jewel of memory Nuriko was keeping. Alone in one of the rooms, Taka and Miaka are surprised when the girl that attacked Taka before shows up there. Taka manages to use a life force blast on her (presumably because with the return of Tamahome's memories, his power returns as well.) Just then, Tenkou appears and changes the bedroom into part of his palace. He steals the jewels of memory from Taka. The other seishi are finally able to break the barrier, and throw Hotohori's sword through. Tenkou uses his former servant as a shield, and she is killed. He then disappears. Taka is depressed, feeling he can't meet Miaka's expectations without the memories, but Nuriko talks to him and makes him feel better. Tasuki is in the forest, thinking that he hates that Miaka has to go through this. He is hit with water all of a sudden and decides he will take Miaka for himself. He beats up Taka and takes Miaka to an inn to get her drunk. Tasuki takes Miaka up to the room, and ties to show her that he loves her and make her forget about Taka. Miaka resists, and Taka comes to rescue her. Tasuki beats Taka around some more, then realizes he is under a spell from the water. He uses his fire fan to engulf himself in flames, rather than hurt Miaka. The other seishi show up and Mitsukake saves Tasuki. He apologizes profusely later.
&nsbp; Back at the dwelling, the room is flooded and Hikou shows up to kidnap Miaka in a ball of water. The others can't fight against the water, and she is taken. The man turns out to be Chichiri's old best friend who had betrayed him, and he refuses to kill him again. Mitsukake talks some resolve into him. Chichiri, Tasuki, and Taka go to rescue Miaka. They confront Hikou and defeat him, and as he dies, he becomes right with Chichiri again. At the house, Taka is disturbed by the fact that he doesn't have a reflection in the mirror. Meanwhile, the other seishi are attacked.
Surprisingly, Tamahome shows up to save them. Taka, at meeting Tamahome (with all his memories intact) figures he has no chance at keeping Miaka, when the Tamahome she remembered is here. He leaves to go back to the real world. There, he finds out that that he is the real Tamahome, and the other one was just a fake, made from the memories he had lost. He tries to save Miaka by calling out to her. In the book, Tamahome has almost convinced Miaka to forget about Taka, but she hears Taka calling her and feels something isn't right, so she follows his voice back to the real world. The two have a happy reunion, and Miaka finally sleeps with Taka. Afterwards, the two decide to go back into the book in order to save the others. There, they are greeted by Tamahome, who attacks Taka. Tamahome accidentally kills Miaka, when she steps in front of his attack in order to save Taka. Lying on Taka's lap, as she dies, Miaka asks him to make her one with him and tells him she loves him. The others show up too late. Tenkou appears and tells them he has enjoyed watching them through all of this, but that he has enough power (through negative energy directed at him) to follow his ambitions and rule both worlds. Miaka appears to Taka as a spirit, and encourages him, then joins with him so they can live as one. Taka goes over to Tamahome and takes his memories back within himself to be whole again. Taka, is then transported back to the real world, with Miaka's body in his arms, and her spirit is there with him. He confronts Tenkou, who tells him he granted him a body this way, however Taka isn't impressed, and says he's become much stronger. Tenkou attacks, but the other seishi break Tenkou's barrier and show up to protect Taka from the attack. Miaka's voice, as well as Taka's sound together as they summon suzaku to destroy Tenkou. Taka and Miaka revive Suzaku with their own lives. Suzaku appears in their place and calls the other three gods to join him in destroying Tenkou. After it is all over, Taka and Miaka, as well as the seishi appear back in the book, and Taiiskun explains that Miaka and Taka's bodies couldn't take that much power, but their life force remained. To use suzaku's power, they had separated from their bodies in the real world and currently exist only in spirit bodies. She tells them they can choose to live anywhere they wish now. They decide to go back into the real world and are finally really together.
