      The Mikos of Fushigi Yuugi

The Four Gods in the world of Fushigi Yuugi, have seven Seishis, and those Seishi are to one day protect their "Miko". Miko means "Priestess" or "Shrine Maiden". Each Miko has to be a young girl who will come into their world from another and is chosen by the God.The girl gets to thier world by the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", a book in the real world. When a god chooses a girl, their power pulls her into the world. She is to arrive in that gods country (Yui's an exception since she technically appeared in Konan first) when the time has come for her Seishi to gather.

When the Miko arrives, she is given the specific title of the God that chose her, and lives in the palace with the emperor. The Miko is supposed to bring together all of her Seishi. When all seven have gathered, they can all perform a ceremony to call their God forward. The God can then grant the Miko's three wishes. In ancient times, all the countries recieved a scroll, the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", that contains the legend of the young lady who will appear from another world, for tehir own country. The book "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" in the real world is the other end of the link between both worlds. This creates a link between the two worlds, which aside from the Gods power, brings the Miko over.

In Fushigi Yuugi, there have already been two Mikos in the past; Genbu no Miko: Okuda Takiko and Byakko no Miko: Oosugi Suzuno. The story picks up at the start when two more Mikos arrive; Suzaku no Miko: Yuuki Miaka and Seiryuu no Miko: Hongo Yui. The Seishi are to protect the Miko usign their God-given powers until she calls their God. Once the God is called, and the three wishes are made, her purpose in the alternate world ends and returns to the real world. Since the book writes itself as it goes along, when the story ends, the Miko can't return.

In the ceremony to bring forth ones God, the Miko repeats something written in the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", and then burns the scroll. She must be surrounded by her seven Seishi as it will not work if any of them are not present or if someone is dead. However, in the case of Miaka and Yui, there was another way to summon their Gods. The girl must have a pure body (virgin) and have a strong will to call the God. Although no one knows it, it is fate for the God to appear and merge with the Miko, which is why she must be pure. A strong will is necessary in order to withstand the God's merging for she will be eventually be devoured if she isn't strong enough.

Okuda Takiko

^TOP

Takiko Okuda was the first known person to enter the book of the "Universe of the Four Gods", and also the first to become a priestess and summon one of the four gods. However, her experience with the book was a tragic one.

Takiko's father, Einosuke Okuda, was the one who originally brought the book back from China to Japan in order to translate it. Takiko had been attempting to destroy it, angry because her father had ignored her mother, who had finally died from an illness. However, he had no idea that Takiko would get sucked into the world of the book. In the world of the book, Takiko was thrown into the land of Genbu (Hokkan), which was being attacked by those of the land of Seiryu (Kutou). As the Priestess of Genbu, Takiko was able to assemble the Genbu Seven and summon Genbu. Her first wish was the eternal protection of Hokkan from attack. Two of her celestial warriors, Tomite and Hikitsu, stayed behind to accomplish this. Her second wish was to return home, which was also granted. However, Takiko never made her third wish, and Genbu was devouring her from the inside, causing her great pain. Helpless to stop it, Einosuke ended up killing Takiko and then himself to prevent the devouring.

Oosugi Suzuno

^TOP

Suzuno Oosugi was the second girl from another world to enter the world of the "Universe of the Four Gods". She entered the world of the book shortly after her father, a friend of Einosuke Okuda, who had originally brought the book back from China, inherited the book. Einosuke and his daughter, Takiko, had met an unfortunate end because of the book, and Suzuno's father was determined not to let that happen again. However, his daughter was still sucked into the world of the book.

Once there, Suzuno was able to become the Priestess of Byakko, and assemble the Byakko Seven in order to save the world of the book from disaster. However, Suzuno fell in love with one of her celestial warriors, Tatara, and attempted to use one of her wishes to bring him back with her to the real world. Byakko was unable to grant this wish, though, and Suzuno and Tatara were forced apart. Suzuno's love for Tatara and her hope that she would one day see him again was what gave her the will to resist the devouring of her by Byakko. 90 years later on her dying day, when Keisuke and Tetsuya found her, she was reunited with Tatara, who had come back one last time to help Miaka and the Suzaku Seven and died in battle doing so.

Yuuki Miaka

^TOP

Miaka is a junior high school student studying for the entrance exams to high school. She is quite a glutton and will literally bite the hand that feeds her (if there is food in it). She is a very caring soul and will sacrifice herself for the good of others despite her gluttonous disposition.

Miaka is the priestess of Suzaku (Suzaku no Miko), sent to the Universe of the Four Gods by an ancient Chinese book with Yui. She finds herself falling in love with Tamahome, the first seishi of Suzaku she meets in this mysterious universe. Miaka's job as Miko requires a pure body and a strong will, the pure body is not a problem (as long as she and Tamahome keep their hands off each other) and the strong will is earned through the hardships Miaka must endure in gathering the seishi and calling Suzaku. She failed to call out Suzaku on her first try. And even if she tried to gather all the shinzahos to call Suzaku again, she fails since Yui beats her to it. But then, she finally calls Suzaku and restores order to the world. And in the end, She becomes friends with Yui again and she gets to stay with Tamahome (Taka) in the real world. She’s born on May 12.

Hongo Yui

^TOP

Yui is the antagonist, one of many, in fushigi yuugi, and Miaka's best friend from childhood. She is a very sharp, bright young girl who will easily get into any high school she chooses. Thrown into ancient China, she is told, by Nakago, she is Seiryuu No Miko (the blue Dragon god of Kutou country) sworn enemy of Suzaku No Miko. Yui's mind is in turmoil over being left in a strange place, having experienced violence first-hand, and blames Miaka for all her problems. Yui is a dynamic character who, controlled by Nakago and half-truths, has set out to kill her once best friend and claim Tamahome for herself at any cost. Suboshi, twin brother of Amiboshi, falls in love with Yui after being her bodyguard. She was born on October 26.

Sakaki Mayo

^TOP

She is the new Miko who appears in the 3rd OAV. Mayo is infatuated with Taka, who is her basketball coach, and loathes Miaka. Sakaki puts her hatred to good use when The Universe of the Four Gods comes into her possession. She arrives to discover that the world is heading towards destruction and she becomes the priestess of Suzaku! O.o
