The SJMP Mathematics/Business Department is dedicated in ensuring that every student reaches her maximum potential in both math and business. The department is very fortunate in that it has numerous full-time math teachers with math specialist degrees and masters degrees. The teachers use their expertise and latest teaching methods (use of technology) to inspire students to learn mathematics.
Students' knowledge and analytical ability and problem solving skills are always increased and challenged through questions, quizzes, tests and math competitions (optional). Math competitions for the various grade levels were written:
Grade 9 - Pascal
Grade 10 - Cayley
Grade 11 - Fermat
Grade 12 - Euclid
This department also offers a variety of courses in the area of business to prepare students for the corporate world of 21st century. Courses include Introduction to Business, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Information Processing, Computer Engineering, Accounting, Marketing, Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Business Administration. All business courses also offer Co-operative Education whereby a student can actually get hands on experience in the subject of their choice.
Students can participate in the OBEA competition in the areas of keyboarding, Data Processing and Accounting. These competitions take place in May of each year. Students can also take part in the Computer Club after school where web-page design is one of the skills learned. To enhance business-related skills, students are encouraged to participate in DECA where students learn to make business decisions through the use of case studies. Students compete at local, national and international levels. Junior Achievement is also encouraged. It provides students with the opportunity to start and run a business. Community and business leaders assist students in this endeavour.
