Absence

The Education Act requires that a parent or student, if the student is eighteen years of age, give the reason for absence either in writing or by calling the school.
Parents are requested to telephone the SCHOOL - Attendance Office 393-5516 press "2" - before 8:30 a.m. on the day a student is to be absent. If a student is absent and a call from the family has not been received, every effort will be made to contact parents.
If a phone call is not received, a student is required to bring a note the next school day explaining the absence.
Every effort will be made by teachers and administration to inform and work with students and parents when attendance problem occur.
Request to Leave Early

Students may not leave the school without authorization. A note explaining the reason for the request to leave early must be brought to the Attendance Secretary BEFORE school begins. A student must sign out in person at the Attendance Office prior to leaving the school. Once a student has signed out, it is expected that she will leave the school property promptly.
Please schedule all appointments for after school hours.
Extended Vacation Absences

Students are encouraged not to take vacations during the school year. Such absences could have a detrimental effect on student academic success. A formal written request must be received well in advance so that arrangements can be made for the completion of any missed work.
ALL REQUESTS MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL. APPROVAL CAN ONLY BE GRANTED BY THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.
Unauthorized Absence from Class (Skipping)

No student is allowed to be on the school premises unless she is signed in and attending all classes.
If a student misses a class without a parental permission, she will be disciplined accordingly. Subject credit(s) may be withheld due to excessive absenteeism. The following disciplinary measures will be taken:
1st INCIDENT: interview with a vice-principal
2nd INCIDENT: student/parent/vice-principal conference
3rd INCIDENT: attendance contract and/or detention(s).
Subsequent incidents: may result in suspension
When a student with a valid reason has been excused during a class, she must carry a hall pass authorizing the absence.
Punctuality & Lates

Students are expected to be in their period 1 (homeroom) class at least five minutes before class begins.
Students arriving late for school must sign in at the Attendance Office and receive an admit slip. The consequences for being late for period 1 are as follows:
FIVE LATES: A letter is sent notifying the parent/guardian of the number of lates to this point.
SIX TO TEN LATES: For each late arrival, the student will have an 8:00 a.m. sign-in on the following day.
MORE THAN TEN LATES: Suspension from school.
Lates for all other classes will be dealt with by subject teachers.
IF A STUDENT ARRIVES MORE THAN 10 MINUTES LATE, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED A SKIPPED CLASS.
Absence During Tests

It is expected if a student missed a test or is late in submitting an assignment, that an explanation be provided in writing to the teacher concerned. Failure to do so may result in a grade of zero.
Absence During Examination

These are a compulsory component of the curriculum. Only in exceptional circumstances such as illness or death in the family, and after consultation with the teacher and the Principal, may alternative arrangements be made. Holidays or work do not count as a reason for either missing exams or for having alternative arrangements made.
No extra time will be provided for a student who is late for her examinations.
